Puk, your books are a bit out of date.
The NZ Artillery did not adopt the lemonsqueezer shape in 1912.
The first regiment to adopt the lemonsqueezer shape was the 17th Ruahine Regiment in 1914, just prior to the war. (Yes they are a Wellington Regiment)
The Wellington Regiment that departed with the Main Body adopted the lemonsqueezer shape on the 24th August 1914.

Service dress caps were issued as early as 1912 and were issued to all NZ troops throughout the war.
