Thanks for the replies.

I've just pulled my heavily annotated copy of Gaylor, a reference I have overlooked of late, and you are absolutely correct Luke he does say 'in brass and also bronze'. I should have looked there first.

I appreciate the theories on the reasons for it being in gilding gents and now feel assured that it is the real deal whatever the reasons for issue.
