Gaunt made a wide range of insignia for the US Army, Navy and Marines since the WW1 era through WW2 (they had a NY office for some time), and Firmin did as well during WW2, although they seem to have been more limited to Army officer insignia.
Your Corp of Engineers badge is an officer's collar badge and dates from WW2. It has the typical brooch fastening of British made insignia.
