Just a few notes to get you started.

This pattern SAAF cap badge was worn c.1926 through to c.1959.
Originally in fire gilt for officers and gilding metal for NCO and men.
Darkened metal (Bronzed) adopted c.1938 and worn through the war years to c.1946
(Note: these were worn with the light khaki drill uniform and were not specific to officers like the British OSD badges)
Cast brass and cast lead were WWII issue due to the quick expansion of SAAF and shortage of insignia.
Chromed badges were worn by the air-force band.

There were many manufacturers, so you will find differences in the patterns as well.

Prior to 1926 a similar badge was worn in gilding metal with the only difference been the scroll - "SAAF ZALM"
