Hi,

This badge is the Askar Melayu Brunei or Brunei Malay Regiment. The first pattern had it's title in arabic, this example being the second pattern worn after the Regiment's return from Malaya circa 1962. The Regiment would soon Become The Royal Brunei Malay Regiment, I believe around 63 or 65. The beret worn by other ranks at this time was black in colour. The broach fitting was common on some early badges before standardising on lugs, also these were worn on Officer's Songkok's. I'm also thinking it may have been worn by females on whatever the Malay's call the hijab. The badge would change to wreath surmounted by the Sultan's Crown and crossed Malay weapons over anchor with eagle forming the top, and a scroll with "Brunei", still worn today.
