The person who sold me the badge had this piece of info attached. I think it helps with time frame. S'pore Military Forces (S'pore Annual Report 1955)

The establishment and maintenance of land forces for the defence ans security of the Colony of S'pore is provided for in the S'pore Military Forces Ordinance, 1953 which had been operative since 27th Apr 1954. The Force stems from the S'pore Volunteer Corps (SVC) founded in 1854 and carried with it the traditions and proud record of over 100 years of voluntary military service in S'pore. The SMF raised and maintained at the expense of the Colony was commanded by an officer seconded from the regular army, assisted by a small permanent administrative and instructional staff.

There are 10 units in the SMF, excluding the Headquarters, and these comprised:

1. S'pore Armoured Corps (Volunteers)
2. S'pore Royal Artillery Coast Battery (Volunteers)
3. S'pore Roal Artillery (Fire Command Battery) (Volunteers)
4. S'pore Royal Artillery (Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment) (Volunteers)
5. S'pore Royal Artillery (Coast Artillery) (Volunteers)
6. S'pore Army Service Corps (Volunteers)
7. S'pore Royal Engineers (Volunteers)
8. S'pore Corps of Signals (Volunteers)
9, S'pore Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
10. 1st Battalion S'pore Volunteer Corps (Infantry)

S'pore Annual Report 1962

In 1957 the first regular battalion, known as the 1st Battalion, S'pore Infantry Regiment (1 SIR) with the regimental motto "Yang Pertana dan Utama (First and Foremost)" was raised and accommodated in temporary barracks in Ulu Pandan.

In 1962 the second regular battalion, the 2nd Battalion, S'pore Infantry Regiment was formed.

The organisation of the SMF was as follows:

1. Brigade HQ, including HQ Company, Ordnance and Provost Section (Regular)
2. 1 SIR (Regular)
3. 2 SIR (Regular)
4. 1st Regiment, S'pore Volunteer Corps (Volunteer)
5. 1st Regiment, S'pore Royal Artillery (Volunteer)
5. Armoured Car Squadron, S'pore Armoured Corps (Regular)
6. Field Squadron, S'pore Royal Engineers (Volunteer)
7. Brigade Signal Squadron, S'pore Corps of Signals (Regular)
8. General Transport Company, S'pore Army Service Corps (Regular and Volunteer)
9. Medical Company, S'pore Army Medical Corps (Volunteer)
10. Brigade Workshop, S'pore Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (Regular)
11. Polytechnic Unit, S'pore Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (Volunteer)
12. Depot Company, S'pore Military Forces
13. S'pore Women's Army Corps (Volunteer)
14. The Band of the S'pore Infantry Regiment
