These badges were produced in chromed metal and white metal, and I have examples of both, along with a set of chromed Kings crowned RAF tunic buttons.
They have never been positively identified, even by several who have researched and/or published on band insignia, but the feeling amongst most is that they are from one of the RAF bands, possibly one of the pipe bands.
The only Commonwealth Air Force of the period to have 'silver' badges as issue were the RCAF who indeed used them for bands. From that similar RAAF and RAF examples are thought to have the same use.
The fixing would almost certainly rule out a sweetheart badge.
