Jack, I remove the badge and we can clearly see its outline on the beret. A Para badge was attached to this beret for a long time. I can't really see why someone would have changed the badge given its relative small price compared to the value of the beret.
To me it's another indication that Parachute Regiment badges were produced with multiple variants and the story is far from being complete.
I would value any other opinions.
