I have a Royal Irish Rifles badge that has had the slider removed and been re-lugged North & South. I remember reading years ago how some soldiers would take their badges to the armourer to have the slider removed and lugs attached. It seems that the badge stayed in the head wear better with lugs and a cotter pin. Sliders would "Slide" out, guess that is why they called them sliders
