Dave, I love that little story, no doubt badges do get damaged and I suppose a good tale can always go with them.
I once had a solid centre Suffolk Regt cap badge and the seller told me the wearer had a close call as it had been hit by a bullet, the hole was about a 64th of an inch wide . . !
