Yes, the Veterinary Department is very early and when formed contained only veterinary surgeons (i.e. officers), it was a first attempt to centralise veterinarian care and take it away from individual cavalry, artillery and service corps units. However it left regiments with the responsibility to provide veterinary ‘assistants’ (ranks below officer) and eventually both groups were brought together in a single, coherent Army Veterinary Corps (AVC).
