I wonder if the words of FM Sir William Slim (Defeat into Victory) have any validity today.
"The rush to form special forces arose from confused thinking on what were, or were not, normal operations of war." "This cult of special forces is as sensible as to form a Royal Corps of Tree Fellers and say that no soldier, who does not wear its green hat with a bunch of oak leaves stuck in it, should be expected to climb a tree."
Perhaps the next CDS will have his own ideas on the next 'specialist" infantry units; meanwhile, any suggestions?
