Take a look at the link I put in..... you will see that the early Gaunts were marked in the Top bones.
Re Large Collar Motto..... they probably didn't last long. The image I show is the only one i have found (in that size). I can date it because in that group photo containing the 17L Officer is the PAOLIY Adjutant from the 21st Lancers (Captain Robinson) after his return from the 2nd Boer War.
