It's become a common error to label those pewter buttons with rose impressions as naval or naval officer. As Dixon Pickup told me The facts are these, in 1748 the Admiralty issued their first Dress Regulations for officers of the RN, included in these were descriptions of the GILT (and always gilt) buttons to be worn by, Officers of Flag Rank, Captains, Commanders and Lieutenants. Greenwich have a near full set of these first patterns.

They are just fancy pattern georgian buttons i find piles of them and in coventry im further from the sea than any other point in england.
