Stephen.
That's very interesting Stephen, & to follow it up I've just done a Google search that turned up an auction lot of a 1941 Lincolnshire Regiment bush hat (sadly no photo) which is described as having a "regimental flash of a red X, against a black square worn by a member of the 1st Bn." IF this description is correct (& they're not mistaking dark blue for black, for instance), would this suggest that the coloured background might differentiate between battalions (which might make sense) - although a white background would still seem unlikely, I would've thought. Incidentally (in case it makes a difference), my Dad was 2nd Bn. initially, which was then merged/reformed as 1st Bn.
