Hello Duncan, There were two distinct types of printed patches, one was printed on Cotton Drill No 2 and the other on Satin Drill No 2. The first is thicker and somewhat duller, while the Satin Drill is a bit thinner feeling and seems a bit more "reflective". However not all the overseas formations and units had the two types, as the Cotton Drill was used from early 1943 until about April 1944. Then all the printed titles and signs were on Satin Drill.
