I'm not sure what you mean by a 'pin and backplate - unless you are referring to Glengarry badges.
Basically 'cap badges' - as introduced in the mid 1890s - had two 'loops' (though commonly referred to as lugs )! These were punched through the cap and held by a split pin.
I 1906 these were largely superseded by 'vertical shanks' (commonly known as sliders).
however, the loops re-emerged in the 1930s.
The different types were adaped for caps or side caps.
