It's a really SOLID badge. No chance of this getting damaged. I think that the term "On War Service" was a deliberately vague one that hid a multitude of things. My Dad (a schoolboy in the UK during WW2) tells that there was someone who was in an "essential" industry and therefore couldn't be conscripted. He was making the pips for the artificial strawberry jam....
If it's not a true story, it darn well should be!
