Although known initially as the Terai hat in the 1900 Officers Dress Regulations, it soon after became general issue for other ranks field dress until the service dress cap was issued in 1905. It did not appear on clothing ledgers under that nomenclature. It was often referred to as a 'slouch hat'. It's slang name was a 'wideawake'.
