I don't know the details as to what makes it 'never been done before' but as I understand it in 1969 Tom McClean pioneered a then new route 'from Canada', this was almost 1000 miles shorter than ocean rows from the USA. I've no idea whether that was supported or unsupported!
Frankly anyone that does it, any route should be highly commended. The charities he's picked do some great work and he has personally been involved with them supporting vets with PTSD.
