Thank you very much for your extremely comprehensive reply, it will help me no end as (in case you hadn't worked it out) I know pretty much nothing about naval badges.
The guy I got the jacket from said it was a 1970's issue one but I have no idea if that's true. The label says jumper, seamans, class 2 if that helps any.
If you do have any photos of what I'm looking for that would be a great help. I thought I was going for the easy route using modern badges, trust me to do the opposite.
