I disagree with their categorisation of the gold-wire "A"s, as being 'auxiliary' naval insignia (RN/FAA). I think these look more like AAF/RAuxAF No5 mess-dress lapel badges (although I find the colour of the backing cloth difficult to identify).
All rather 'loosely curated'....if this is typical of Smithsonian presentation, I'd be very surprised. Lint, dust, random threads. Curious.
