It's more than possible: it's highly likely as they were a cadet corps of that regiment before WW2.
Lots of cadets continued to wear badges that were obsolete in the Regular Army so it sounds like his memory is right. Also the Berkshire TA wore the Berkshire cap badge when the Regulars were wearing the Wessex Wyvern 1958-68. The DERR badge was a collar until then when it became a cap badge.
