In WW2 the Royal Navy only wore the blue on white badge on tropical rig, the gold /yellow badge was worn on the cuff of square rig and fore and aft rig by ratings who were employed in combined ops, but a red on navy blue badge was worn by RN personnel wearing khaki battledress such as landing craft crews, RN beach head commandos and Combined Operations Pilotage Parties to name a few. Even today, RN Communicators who are members of 148 Commando Forward Observation Battery still wear the Red on Blue Combined Ops badge.
