At the risk of answering my own question, I have been going through a few books and right there in K&K is the sealed date of 1949. If this is correct then the small mark was in use at least up to then. Just as interestingly the a/a q/c version was sealed in 1959 which was the date of the year before amalgamation. This collaborates the statement in another thread (time for a merge I think) that the regt wore the k/c until the end in 1960- presumably they still had old stock to use up.
