‘Small crown’ refers to the size/volume of the beret - it means they are generally smaller than those used in WWII and into the 1950s and 1960s - less overhanging the side of the head when pulled down by the right ear. They were/are viewed as more stylish and smarter than the issue lid, although the issue beret has now also shrunk in line with the private purchase variant.
