Fakes

I am sorry to have to concur they are all fakes. Mind you: former SAS troopers (if indeed former SAS) are not necessarily experts on SAS insignia.

SAS wings

The SAS downswept wings with paper backing were made in the early 60-ies and worn by all SAS Regiments, not just by 23rd SAS as sometimes stated. This particular pattern was also worn in Malaya.

Fake

hi Andy,

Indeed, a fake! There are a great many variations of SAS wings, but that one is no good.

'Greek Wing'

Friends,

That wing is a fake, thank Goodness, for it is ugly as sin with that watermelon canopy! Copied from a very rare locally made wing. Normally, the Greek Sacred Squadron would wear regular...

hi Frederic,

No doubt a fake wing, artificially aged.

Does not conform to WW2 patterns I know.

Beret

Friends,

That is a British beret, not Rhodie.

Any markings in the liner? Have you tried the wet test? I mean, if you wet the lining, any beret markings come out more clearly.

White SAS berets

Friends,

There are some pictures of the original early white SAS berets in 'Gentleman Jim' the book on Jim Almonds.

The white berets were very shortlived. Have a look at some original berets...

Steamer Point

Friends,

Steamer Point was a location where military tailors were located in Aden.

See label and wing as sold in Aden.

The 1949 pattern shown in earlier post was probably just made in the...

1949 pattern

Friends,

A lovely sample of the 1949 pattern wing!

Black cloth on the reverse, I would think! Although I have seen one with a paper back.

Well done!

21 pattern

Hi Richie,

The typical 21 Winged Dagger pattern, first worn on the arm as a rectangular patch, then cut to a shield shape (albeit a bit irregular) and moved to the maroon beret, later the sand...

Metal para wing

Friends,

That metal, enamel para wing I have seen worn on the battledress pocket like that by Belgian 5 SAS.

I think it came from the Belgian parachute company as it is a regular British Para...

handmade wings

hi Jack,

In handmade wings, anything is possible! I believe the original wings were very well and professionally made in the well known colours, but (new) unit members can have taken original...

2nd SAS title

hi Luc,

No doubts whatsoever on this one!

There are quite a few variations in terms of the material on the reverse: no gauze (like on this one), black gauze, fine tan gauze, rough tan gauze.

I agree! It is so easy to stick a new beret badge to a new beret!

Of course, it is technically still a SAS beret, but not very collectable as never issued to or worn by a serving member of the...

Fake

Hi Steve,

As fake as a three-dollar bill, as our American friends say.

The sheer amount of material at the back is also a giveaway, as is the general look and feel: Made in Pakistan!

Mutilated beret badges

You are quite right, mate!

It is not so easy, even for an experienced tailor, to cut a proper shield shape. I have seen a lot of weird shapes, some beret badges sewn on uncut and some beret...
