Why would a slider be on a Vol Artillery badge for wear in a cap when the slider for caps hadnt been introduced?

Certainly from the front its a Volunteer Artillery forage cap badge, but as it was discontinued in 1902 it shouldnt have a slider and I have only seen them with loops, so I am puzzled

You misunderstand. That badge is an NCO's arm badge worn in the 9th Lancers.
It has nothing to do with being a saddler etc. He would also have worn the saddlers badge to show he was a saddler.
