I concur, the poor quallity on the back of the badge confirms it is definately a cast badge, and as far as I am awear, British LRDG association badges made by J R Gaunt (1946) and Russell King badges...

If it has no silver stamp then it is best to describe it as a white metal badge.

A very interesting picture for 1917, the lions head would possibly be from his service with the 7th MR, but the vent holes are rare, maybe private purchase, or could be a British made hat.
