Hi Roger

There is a "?" over some Yeomanry buttons with the now infamous "Gaunt London" backmark but I think both of yours above are possibly OK.

I could be wrong here but:

Surrey Yeomanry ...

Yes, that's quite correct of course. But your buttons are RHG and could only (if original) date pre 1969. So, at that time the dies would belong to seperate companies, as I mentioned above.

I think I'll have to sit on the fence re the QC RHG buttons, I honestly can't decide if they are "good" or "bad".

There is no reason why they shouldn't exist as they do, particularly as a private...

Hi GTB

It's unlikely your two buttons are from the "same or identical die" as they were made by two different companies.

Incidentally, I have the A/A buttons with both Firmin and Gaunt (with...

Hi GTB

Sorry to say that your button isn't MPSC (or Military Police). Their buttons were rimless and with a plain background. I'm not sure they wore gilt buttons at that time either.

The button...

As Roger says, it's one of numerous generic backmarks; usually used to conceal the manufacturers identity when the button was sold through a retailer or wholesaler. The button itself is perfectly...

Hi Rob

Certainly genuine and I have the same. The suspect marks have the name within a circlet rather than as on these buttons so it's possible that pattern was used earlier, WW2 maybe or they...

So is my 17/21L but he does say only some are domed!

It also has the tinted back which is not good. (At least I think it does, I've looked at so many buttons during the course of this thread that...

Hi Rob

I think it was first used in the 1880's. Not sure how long it continued because it continued to be used alongside their other backmarks with "Ltd". It was certainly in use for many years...

Hi Chaps

Exciting news, the oracle has spoken again!

Here are a couple more pearls of wisdom -

The most suspect of all the defective Gaunt London marks are those with a broken "G" & "T" in...

Hi Chaps

I've brought this discussion to the attention of a long standing and well respected button collector. Not a forum member and he doesn't want his name mentioned.

Here are the criteria...

Hi Rob

No problems with your button.

I don't like the one on e-bay, I would say restrike. But I suppose it could be an example just pre 1968 if they were using the defective backmark? I...

Yes, that's a good point and something I haven't tried. Will have a go when I get chance, although I don't actually have many of the repro buttons. Obviously, you would have to compare them...

I think we are going around in circles here :)

I would say that they are restrikes rather than fakes as such. They appear to have been struck from the original dies so that would be my definition of restrike. I would say a fake would be...

Hi Chaps

Just a few quick points re the above posts.

GTB - I hope your 9L is a genuine Officers private purchase from the 1950's as it would probably make my 17/21L and a few others genuine...

Looking at the above -

RDF - restrike - 100% certain. (If it is "Gaunt . London" that is).

9th Lcrs - possible restrike, not sure. I have a 17/21 Lcrs which is exactly as your 9 Lcrs...

The majority of the restrikes have defective lettering but by no means all of them. Perhaps they used more than one backmark die when manufacturing them (most likely) or the die became worn/damaged...

As regards the two Parachute Regt buttons, neither one is WW2.

GTB - no problem with it, O/R's c. very late 1940's or very early 1950's. They changed to anodised pre 1953.

Rob - possibly as...
