Dave, the AP wing you posted from the ebay lot is a South African wing. They have a very distinct style of laurel wreath and thread pattern. Nice wing.

Regardless of the technicality of date the ribbon is the exact same for both. Besides the authorization for the CVSM was October of 1943 so this photo was likely taken sometime in 1944 onwards.

The overlay on the front looks like it was cast, not stamped. That would explain the lack of detail, pockmarking and the uneven edge. Definitely an oddity! Interesting find.
