It dosesnt feature as one of the several similar HVDC titles in 'British Colonial Badges' by Renfrew & Cranston, but I would speculate the 'R' is for Reserve.

The use of this material is used by the fakers to hide the backs of badges or to construct false combinations.

the photo dates c. 1910.

FYI postcard photos didnt exist until c. 1903 ish.

Before that photos were on thick card.

I think the shape is consistent with the addition of chevrons at the bottom.

The RAFVR badge is possibly a blazer badge and ATC stands for Air Training Corps not Transport.
