All the metal badges in picture 4 appear to be repro or are likely to be repro as they have been heavily restruck. I am afraid the 12th Lancers is totally wrong as the feather design is not correct...

The regiment was still garrisoning Malta for some years (c1905 from memory) and did adopt the K/C cap badge. There 's photo on the forum somewhere.

Unlikely as the tunic is very personalised with those badges so it's not a prop and he must have had a hat to wear with the uniform to travel there.
