Luke, I was not referring to any seller in particular, just a rule of thumb that puts me off certain sellers, yes, I have bought perfectly original badges from sellers who for one reason or another...

I would think that a seller who has "No returns accepted" should be a warning to anyone thinking of buying scarce military badges from them, but no, they get bids and positive feedback.

I suppose if someone does buy one of these they can always recoup some of the money as scrap silver, whereas a dud made from base metal is really worthless unless a re enactor wants one.

I bought this little badge this morning thinking it was an East Yorkshire Regt collar badge, when I looked at Churchill's book it showed a similar badge in bi-metal which was credited as an arm badge...

Thanks chaps for your thoughts, I don't think it is a helmet plate centre, possibly the lugs could have gone through a thin strap and a pin to hold the item in place, maybe for a bandsman's equipment...
