Thank you. Quite an interesting badge then. Are you sure the 'fire service' part was erased? or was the badge specifically made for the role? The enamel doesn't look as though it's been overlayed....

I would think that badges won't see a change in cypher and crown until after the King's Coronation, which will probably be sometime next year. Same with stamps, currency, medals for the monarchs head...

I wonder if anyone can narrow it down further by his uniform maybe?
Maybe this chap slightly pre dates 1854 and the medal could be Crimea/Indian Mutiny?
