This is the patch for the old 7th French armoured division up until 1999-2000, now the 7th armoured brigade of the French army.

It looks like your man is wearing a machine-gun collar shown in the CEF section as Babin 31-2.He also wear a metal shoulder title but also an unusual cloth shoulder title....as you already mentioned....
