It clearly cannot be both genuine and a copy, from the photographs I would say it is just another crudely die cast plated OSD, but, an original piece like others you encounter to various regiments.

I have encountered examples before and have always just assumed it was officially done as a simple case of waste not, want not, much like altering a die to remove the word Imperial, or to remove lugs...
