I believe that the a/a ones were worn by cadets up to the formation of the RRS. This is why they are so abundant.

If you open the ebay link the seller has a few from the same school. They all look to be pre 1935 and Cadet Corps. Interestingly no shoulder titles are being worn in any photos at that period.
