Under the microscope, it shows better that the bushy piece is not the tail, the thin tail is actually there but its mashed a bit into the leaf. It is bad voiding and unclear die engraving.

I have a Buffs badge with the same sparkly bits...

I have a Buffs badge with the same sparkly bits in it, I think it may be a locally made badge and the sparkles are impurities in the cast metal.
