Some British collar badges now have pin backs. They don't seem very strong to me,I'd prefer a lug any day .
I've not seen a black RGR with pins previously, but I think I'd go along with Tim's...

The shield design was replaced Terry,by a facing pair of smaller versions of the cap badge . I'd have to check in Gaylor for a date.
The OSD bugles were originally the same size as the cap badge....

Thistles with 2 lugs are part of the old Scots Guards shoulder title. A.single lug is the London Scottish collar badge.

Made me think of something I saw a few weeks ago. An Officers fsc to the 3rd Gurkhas. Another that's double badged. A cord boss to the front and a crowned A to the side .
