Specifically the period from mid/late war to 1922 when you see the overlap between WW1 design pith helmets with cork spacers to the letter over WD over number....

From what I've found, they had a dark grey uniform and started out with a shako until ~ 1881 when the uniform was changed to red and a dark grey helmet was used.
