Probably a result of it being washed in petrol and I don't suppose in a war zone ( alright police action zone) anyone would be particularly bothered about things like the colour.

It sounds like the same type that was issued post war. I had that type issued in 1958 and it was still in use in 1973.The number was issued to a member of the Royal Engineers.

It depends on what grade electrician he was , in my time 1958-73 as a third class tradesman you wore no trade insignia and also once you reached the rank of sergeant you no longer wore a trade badge.
