The stripe was introduced in 1940 before the coloured arm titles as the BEF in France found it difficult to identify soldiers in helmets and without shoulder titles.

I can't comment on this practice in WW1 but it was quite common for soldiers of British units in the later stages of WW2 and afterwards to wear the signs of formations they had previously served...
