Not only were there many differences in voids, but in overall size and the shape of the leaves surrounding the center. The A&SH have some the most variations of all badges.

I think the rather thick impression the base of the blades give is due to the very small size of the badge.

Strange tiny badge which seems to have not been bronzed, or perhaps it lost the finish from wear and repair. I think it to be good as well.

I am not sure of this, but I think the 13th did not have an arm badge?
If Linaker shows LCpls with them, then they did at the period in question.
Thanks all,

Thanks for that. I cannot seem to find any photos of Hussar LCpls wearing them though. Is it possible that it varied according to the regimental custom?

Did LCpls wear the arm badge pre 14?
Did LCpls of cavalry, specifically Hussars, wear the regimental arm badges prior to the war? It is my understanding that they were worn only by NCOs, the Lance rank being an appointment only.

It is indeed for the bell top Shako, an officer's example. Being silver, I would assume for some volunteer unit. I believe the red and white ball was worn by a number of regiments/battalions.

Did all line infantry regiment have pioneers in the pre 1914 era? I cannot recall ever having seen the crossed axes sleeve badge on a highland regiment soldier for example.

The ancient British Army, replete with proper posh officers. There is a concomitant series on the Guards of this time as well. Enjoy.
