Merchant Navy brass badges

These came with some other items recently, one has the remains of lugs or wires? the other no visible way of fitting.

Are they cheap devices which come with a white topped hat worn by Gin Palace...

Yes sorry I probably worded it wrong, they must have been issued with General Service buttons especially in war time but they were never officially denied their own Regimental buttons in the period...

I think the buttons are right, the Royal Engineers didn't use the General Service buttons.
