Hello Sue, what you have there is a Royal Air Force officers peaked hat badge.
Very similar to those worn today if you look for some photos - yours is older of course as it has a 'kings' crown....

Unissued - ie it was never issued from stores to a serviceman to be worn on a hat.
It is a badge that purports to be over 100 years old, so, usually, you would expect it to show some signs of wear....

I seem to recall seeing a 4 Sqn patch with a 4 rather than IV but it did also feature a harrier and a lightning bolt.

I'm unsure as to the number (4) as I think only 54 Sqn RAF were involved in enforcing the Northern no fly zone....

The kind of thing you would receive for winning something, the area in the centre to be engraved. Maybe, depending on size, to be hung from a pocket watch chain.
