I've achieved the same effect on a chromed brass...
I've achieved the same effect on a chromed brass cap badge (tho' not a RAF one) that I used to wear simply by pushing out the central "ERII" monogram using my fingers.

It measures about 3 1/4" / 19 mm across.
Can a button guru hazard a guess at the manufacturer please? I can make out "LONDON" but not much else.
