Hi Alex! I hope you're keeping well.

Yes, there is a crown and anchor between RNVR and SOUTH AFRICA. Even with the aid of a large magnifier it is difficult to make out what is visible on some of...

I have today purchased the postcard shown below. It is apparently of personnel of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (South African Division). The seller also told me that it dated from 1915. I have...

This is the cypher adopted by King Charles III. This is the cypher that the press release referred to and which will be worn as a badge by personnel at the Coronation.

New Badges

These are not the new King's Crown navy badges - just an example of poor promo from the MoD. What the release is actually referring to is a CIIIR cypher badge that is to be worn by personnel at the...

Just wanted to point out that this is actually an RND CPO badge. This style of badge wasn't adopted by PO's until after WWI when CPOs adopted the design of badge (with a wreath) that they still wear...

New Commando Titles

The 'USMC Commando' titles were supposedly worn by US Marines attached to/serving with the Royal Marines. They are apparently completely bogus (according to RM Senior NCOs).

Unknown naval shoulder strap

Hi Alex

There's some info on Marconi Radio Operators during the First World War here:

www.marconiheritage.org/fww.html.

No information on uniforms or insignia I'm afraid.

Last two for ideas!

Hello all,

The anchor badge shown was worn by civilian staff working at the Admiralty as messengers, doormen, etc. They were actually collar badges and were unofficially worn as cap badges. These...

HMS Warspite Hat

I have my doubts about this tally being genuine. It just doesn't look right and the material it is made from seems very thin. There is also the problem of the missing dot after the name.

During...

Kings crown Officers gilt button with lines

Hi Barry

That's the same backing as found on the fashion buttons here.

As you say having the lined background is probably a way of getting around the laws relating to official insignia.

Kings crown Officers gilt button with lines

Morning Barry

A LOT of these Kings crown/lined buttons turn up in the UK. They are generally dismissed as being fashion items. Can you show an image of the back please? Thanks.

You are correct! I forgot that the badge was re-introduced for wear in 1939 by Class III ratings. But the information I gave was also correct.
