Looking on Lee-Metford pages the Mk II was introduced in 1892 & I can see that the magazine on the one on the left is indeed that type but can't see more detail than that in rgard to the safety catch?

I am thingking it is very late 1880's/early 1890's but would love some confirmation & I think the rifles would be the clue. Other than that I wonder if the R.M. Museum still have those...

Yep, that's him. He got the unusual initials due to the fact he was born in 1900 when my Great-Grandfather was serving in the CIV - City Imperial Volunteers.
