Personally I look at hands feet and face on these badges, construction I doubt in my limited experience changed much from 1890 up...

It would appear then when the so called overlay was added the reverse would miraculously show the Royal Scots, why do other regular ORs show a gilding /brass Saltire /St Andrew to the reverse ????
